TVs and refrigerators have been growing bigger in recent years, while containers of liquid laundry detergents are shrinking. The bulky plastic jugs you used to lug home from the store are giving way to smaller packages as many manufacturers offer concentrated versions of their detergents.

Tougher Energy Star requirements mean washers must now use 11 percent less energy and 20 percent less water to qualify for an Energy Star seal. Our tests show that you don't have to pay more to get that added efficiency and great washing in the bargain.

Don't assume you should replace your dryer if you buy a new washer. But if you're in the market for a new one, you'll find some refinements. The biggest is a moisture sensor, which automatically stops the machine when the laundry is dry. Most we tested are both capable and quiet.
